Question by Device: A question about yoga and meditation? I love yoga I do bikram yoga and other types of Hatha yoga I love the way my body feels after and it keeps me in good shape. The problem is I find it hard to meditate while twisting my body into these unthinkable positions. I love to meditate I just find it difficult to meditate while I’m in uncomfortable positions. However I find I can meditate after I’ve finished my yoga practice. Is this normal? Or can most people meditate while in yoga poses? Best answer:

The challenge is to meditate under duress…. keep trying.

Bikram yoga (TM) is not “real” yoga–it is marketed typed of performance exercise based in Hatha yoga postures. The physical aspect of yoga is a small part of yoga but this is what has become popularized in the west. Doing yoga exercises is healthy and a very experienced Hatha yoga practitioner might get. into a complicated yoga pose and hold it and meditate in that pose but you need not be in a yoga pose to meditate. When doing physical yoga, you maintain mental concentration during the exercise. After doing a set of exercises, then you might do some breathing exercises. Then you assume an “asana”–a sitting pose–a comfortable one (even sitting in a chair) and then meditate.

You shouldn’t really meditate WHILE practicing yoga. They are different activities with different purposes. What you should do is practice yoga some days and meditate other days.
